Edith was one of six children born to 
Samuel Willetts Haycraft.

 

Edith was the older sister of Cecily who married Lionel Dibdin and died with him in a plane crash in 1933 leaving two orphans Peter Dibdin and Joan Dibdin. Cecily's other child, Stanley had died earlier.

Between 1933 and 1939, Joan lived with Edith during her holidays from school in Bexhill until she left to go to the Royal Academy of Music.

Before her retirement to Castleton, which was during the time that Joan was under her care, Edith ran a School called the Towers in Saltburn on Sea.
