Lionel joined up as an 2nd Lieutenant in 1916 and had about 6 month training he was allocated to the 225 Field Co.. He was gassed in 1917 and after recuperation, worked for the  Air Force sorting the drainage on airfields.

It is noted that these documents have been of interest to two groups with a strong interest in
World War 1 Aircraft and Airfields.
